I find it totally ridiculous that Donald Trump, who owns the Mar-a-Lago Club here in Palm Beach, can’t think straight. Normally, I think he has a somewhat straight head on his shoulders. He has made his fortune by being smart and strategic.  Recently, he has tangled with Rosie O’Donnell over a war of words and has defended Miss America, Tara Conner, over her drinking escapade in New York. So he has been no stranger to the news lately.

However, I am totally shocked that he isn’t seeing the real picture when it comes to the whole flag flying issue. Here is the background. The town of Palm Beach has a flag code that says you can fly any American flag you want as long as it is no bigger than 4-by-6 ft and on a pole that is no higher than 42 ft. The law is very clear and it seems reasonable to me. Donald has the right to fly his American flag all he wants. The problem is that his flag measures 15-by-25 ft and is on an 80 ft tall pole. Common sense should follow the line of thinking that if you are a proud American, you will fly your flag AND follow the law. If you don’t like the law, fight to have it changed or pay the consequences.

Donald says the Palm Beach fine is a restriction of his freedom of speech and that “a smaller flag and pole on Mar-A-Lago's property would be lost given its massive size, look silly instead of make a statement, and most importantly would fail to appropriately express the magnitude of Donald J. Trump's and the Club's members' patriotism,” according to Fox News. I can see his point but really! Is this the kind of dumb sounding publicity he wants?

How about this, Donald? We all love the American flag just as you do and we are glad to see you respect it by having such a strong desire to display it as you do.  Your pride in your country is honorable, but being a good citizen means more than just showing your respect for your country and it's symbols.  It means following the law and being a good citizen or fighting to change the law and being a good example of how democracy works.  Either way, you come off looking better than what you do now.   Donald, you can afford to work on changing the law and accept the consequences that come along with bucking the system.  So if you choose not to obey the law, pay the fine and abide by the judgment until you can get the law changed.  That can only make you seem more American.
