The newest recall of toys from Mattel have given many parents a fright.  The toys and parts are being recalled for high levels of lead in the paint on the toys and magnets that are too small.  The deal is that evidently, China doesn't have as strict a limit on lead levels as we do.  Thank goodness, Mattel tests all products as they come in.  Unfortunately, the toys were sold before the lead levels were identified.  But Mattel stated today that the recalls were more extensive than probably necessary to protect our kids more than the laws require.  So what does this have to do with real estate?  Everything.

Real estate is like a great big toy to some of us.  The homes we have the privilege of listing are fun for us.  We enjoy showing you a new home listing and allowing you to play with the ideas of how you could place your furniture and pictures.  What kind of house  warming party could you throw here?  There are so many types of real estate out there.  Just like the toys that you get to choose from, the choices are multiplied by our team since we handle so many different kinds of real estate.  But just like toys, you need to have a home inspection.

As with anything, you need to do the research before picking a home inspector.  Some questions that you should ask are:

  • Are you certified?
  • How long have you been doing home inspections?
  • If there is something wrong, can you fix it?
  • What kind of repercussions do I have if there is something that goes wrong?

What kind of things will the home inspector look at?

  • Foundation,
  • Roof,
  • A/C and heat,
  • Electrical,
  • Insulation

Don't let people talk you out of getting a home inspection.  I have recently had an acquaintance who bought a home only to find all kinds of things wrong with her new home.  She is having to shell out tons of money to fix all the things wrong with her home that a home inspector would have found.  She might have gone a different way if she had known all the things wrong with her new home.  So don't you go wrong by not getting a home inspection.  You will regret it for the life of your home if you gamble and loose the bet that your new home is perfect.
