What's with all the toy recalls lately?  It seems like every time I turn around, there is another recall or an announcement from a toy distributor like Toys-R-Us that gives you a fright and makes all parents relook at their toy chest.  Everyone wants to make sure their kids are safe.  It's scary to think that what you thought was safe, isn't.  The same goes for your home.  Ever wonder what the most common home injuries and pitfalls are?  Well, we want to make sure you know the most common ways to make your home safer to live in.  That way you can sit back and relax.  You should be able to enjoy the home you are in.

Disclaimer - this is not a substitute for the doctor.  If you feel you need to seek medical attention, please go.  With that said, the most common home injuries are:

  • Stapling your finger.  Do pull out the staple.  Don't use a staple remover.  OK, you can smile at that one but it is one of the most common home injuries.
  • Broken toes.  There isn't really anything to do for a broken toe but tape and Advil.
  • Cut fingers.  Just go out to eat all the time.  Just kidding.  Make sure you aren't distracted when cooking.  This is a very common injury that can be avoided.  Remember that you can cut your finger on anything from a knife to a cheese grater.
  • Falls.  This household injury is very common with the older generations.  Check in with the elderly that live by themselves regularly.
  • Fires.  We have all heard of a girlfriend that has set the stove on fire whether we want to admit it or not.  Keep a fire extinguisher handy and know what kind of fire you have to know what you need to put it out.
  • Drowning.  Living in Fort Lauderdale and near the water, we have a larger chance of a drowning accident than most.  Pools and bath tubs are the most common places in the home for a drowning.
  • Poisoning.  Be sure that you put away all chemicals from your kids.  It is a tragedy when kids get hold of chemicals or medications.  Contact Poison Control immediately if you have any doubt as to what to do with poison injection of any kind.

The most commonly missed home inspection errors are:

  • Faulty wiring.  Most homes that catch fire are from faulty wiring.
  • Old water heaters.  This is the second most common home fire hazard.
  • Leaky roofs.  This is a very expensive error to have to pay for after you find that perfect, new home.

Make sure you use a licensed home inspector.  This will reduce the errors made and give you a way to protect your new investment from a home disaster.  We want you to feel safe in your Fort Lauderdale home.  These are just a few ways to make sure your home is safe for all who live there.  That feeling of security will let you sleep well in your new home.

Talk to you soon,

Christine
