leona_helmsley.jpgLeona Helmsley, dubbed the "Queen of Mean", died today at the age of 87.  She was most noted for her disrespectful treatment of employees.  She was famous for an ill-fated remark that "only little people pay taxes."  Although she denied saying it, the irony in that statement was that she believed it and was found guilty of tax evasion in 1989.  We all should take from Ms. Helmsley that we should pay our debts.  This is true in any area of our lives, especially in real estate.

Very rarely will you see me get on a soap box, but this is one of those days and not in a bad way, I hope.  You see, I work with so many sweet clients that just find themselves in a bind with their mortgage that they have to sell their home to avoid bankruptcy.  This shouldn't have to happen to anyone!  One of the biggest reasons to file for bankruptcy here in Florida is taxes, or the unpaid portion of it, anyway.  I love helping people out but hate seeing anyone in a position to sell their beloved home in order to avoid a bad situation.  So once again, I wanted to let you know that if you find yourself in a situation that you need to get out of, call me.  I will be more than happy to help you.  I don't want to see anyone loose the hard earned equity they have built up in their home.  I have people willing to pay cash for your home just to help you out.  This will keep your credit from going to the Florida Keys.  That far south is only good for your tan line.

So here are a few quick and easy things to think about when trying to avoid bankruptcy:

  • Get a fixed mortgage NOW!  This will give you a definitive payment each month that you don't have to worry about changing each month.
  • Work on a budget to get your spending under control.  I personally like Crown Financial for advice.
  • Make sure you know what you can afford when house hunting in Browad County to avoid such a predicament and talk with your Realtor to find a home in your price range.
  • A trick of the trade is to look for  a home that is just under your lowest range.  People tend to have a range and then go above it by around $20,000.  This can make or break a budget if you don't stick to the plan.

So prove Leona Helmsley wrong once again and keep your home by being able to afford it and it's taxes.

Talk to you later,

Christine
