Hurricane season has officially started!  Hang on to your hats, though.  Life is not over for us in South Florida and Broward County.  Your home is more than likely the biggest investment you will make, so how do you protect it?  We wanted to give you a few tips on hurricane preparedness and safety.  Hopefully, you won't need it this year but "better safe than sorry," I always say.

Hurricanes cause power outages so you will need a few items to stock up on just to be on the safe side.

  1. If you feel froggy, get a generator.  This is not a necessity but it is very convenient to have if you need it.
  2. Stock up on bottled water.  A couple of cases should get one person through at least 3 days.  So stock according to your family.
  3. Non perishable foods should be in the cabinet.  This way you won't have to worry about what to eat when you don't have any power.
  4. Flash lights and batteries are a must if you loose power for any reason.
  5. A battery powered radio is helpful to keep up with the news of what is going on and the help that is available.

There are other things that will protect your home from a hurricane that you might want to stock up on and think about this year before you need to.

  1. Buy tape and plywood for your windows to help protect your home from wind damage.
  2. Cut back any trees near your home.  Old branches and dead wood are the most common sources of home damage other than wind.
  3. Make a plan as to what to do with your older family and pets.
  4. Make sure you have your personables - jewelry, personal papers, medications, etc... readily packable.  You won't have time to think about what you want to take with you when you have just a few minutes to leave.
  5. Don't wait until the last minute to get prepared.  If there s a storm coming up, get your stuff together in case you either need to leave or get caught in the storm.

Early preparation is key to surviving a hurricane.  Most people wait too long and then make a mad dash to the store only to find that everything they need is gone.  I don't want you to feel trepidation and I want you to think positively when you hear that there is a storm in your path instead of you in the path of a storm.  I hope that we don't have any major storms this year but reality is that we will see at least 1 tropical storm or bigger.  So take a deep breath and know that we will make it through another hurricane season with ease!

Talk to you later,

Christine
